महालक्ष्म्यष्टकं स्तोत्रं यः पठेद्भक्तिमान्नरः।

सर्वसिद्धिमवाप्नोति राज्यं प्राप्नोति सर्वदा॥९॥

एककाले पठेन्नित्यं महापापविनाशनम् ।

1. Know that you are not the body but the spiritual Self

The first lesson of the Bhagavad-Gita is about knowing who we truly are and what we represent because most of our problems arise from our mistaken notions of who we are. We tend to identify ourselves with our physical personalities since it is the most visible aspect of ours. Thereby, we fail to know our spiritual nature and our deeper connection with God and eternal life. The scripture makes it clear we are not mere physical beings but spiritual entities. Hence, we should not fear death, decay and transience.

The body is the field of activity (Kshetra), in which God or the Self dwells as the Knower of the Field (Kshetrajna). The body is made up of five great elements, the senses, subtle senses, mind, ego and intelligence. It is the seat of desires, attachments, feelings, emotions and such other modifications. The knower of the body is the Supreme Brahman, or the Self, who resides in the body as the indwelling witness and the ultimate enjoyer.

The body is an aspect of Prakriti, which the scripture describes as the city with nine gates. The knower of the body is Purusha, who keeps it alive with his presence. All actions, movements and modifications arise in the field of Prakriti from the Gunas, while the Purusha is the witness, the Guide, and the Non-doer. Seated in Prakriti, he enjoys the objects of Prakriti. Enveloped by the impurities of Nature such as ignorance and delusion, he becomes bound to the mortal world.

The Bhagavad-Gita reminds us that the body is unreal because it is a mere outer covering, and temporary. It is like a garment worn by the self. We should not accept our physical identities as our true identities because we are spiritual beings. There is a Self in each of us, which is hidden and transcendental. It is the ultimate reality of our existence and universally present in all living beings as an aspect of the Supreme Self. It is real, permanent, immortal, indestructible and beyond the grasp of the mind and the senses. Hence, it is known only when one transcend them.

2. Stabilize your mind by overcoming desires

Your mind is the seat of your desires, thoughts and feelings. Your wandering senses keep your mind in a state of turmoil. They are responsible for your desire for sense objects and your attachment to them. Your desires and attachments in turn subject you to conflicting emotions and mental instability, as you respond to the pairs of opposites with attraction or aversion according to your inherent nature.

An unstable mind is characterized by egoism, attachments and desire ridden actions. A person of unstable mind is not fit for salvation. His consciousness keeps wandering around sense objects, and he remains entangled in the distractions of the world. The instability of the mind is therefore the first problem, which an aspirant has to resolve to know himself and achieve liberation.

However, how can anyone stabilize his mind?  The Bhagavadgita suggests that only by disengaging the mind from the external world and withdrawing into oneself one can stabilize it. It is not an easy task. Through self-discipline a devotee should restrain his senses and develop detachment from the sense objects. Then only he can experience peace and equanimity. With the attainment of inner tranquility, his mind becomes stabilized in silence, and his suffering would come to an end. Then, he can easily establish his mind in God and achieve union with him.

3. Do your duty with detachment, renouncing the doership

By merely restraining your senses and controlling your mind, you will not be able to free your soul from the cycle of births and deaths. For success on the path, you have to cultivate detachment and remain free from attraction and aversion to things, besides knowing the difference between actions that bind you and actions that free you. You should engage in performing your obligatory duties as a selfless service and an offering to God, renouncing the desire for their outcome. In other words, you must live without expectations, free from desires, without abandoning your duties and obligations.

Not all actions are the same. There are actions, which bind you, and actions, which free you. One should also know the difference between action, inaction and inaction in action and action in inaction. When desires are involved, both actions and inaction become binding, whereas when they are absent action or inaction does not bind. This is the secret to avoid sinful consequences which arise from your actions. It is also why one should avoid performing actions.

The  Bhagavad-Gita says that none can escape from actions or remain inactive even for a moment. Whoever is born on earth is helplessly driven to action by his inborn gunas (modes or tendencies). Therefore, a devotee should better perform his obligatory duties, with an attitude of renunciation, without seeking to personally benefit from them.

Actions should never be shunned, because the world cannot continue without people performing their duties. Therefore, one should uphold Dharma and undertake God’s duties upon earth, knowing that action is superior to inaction and of actions selfless actions are the best because they do not produce karma. The renunciation of doership is also important. While performing actions, one should not think that one is the doer, nor should there be any attachment to them.

An ignorant person acts with attachment, thinking, “I am the doer,” whereas the wise person who has overcome delusion and ignorance knows that he is merely doing his duty as an obligation to God. He acts without attachment, for the sake of the world and God. For him there is no interest in what is being done or not to be done, nor does he depend upon anyone for anything. For him all actions become offerings.

This is karma yoga. God exemplifies it through his own actions. Actions do not taint him, even though he engages in them, because he is complete in all respects and has no desire for their outcome. A wise person lives and acts like God. He has the complete knowledge of actions and knows the various methods by which sacrifices are performed. Knowing thus, with the help of such knowledge, he becomes free from the consequences of his actions. His actions become burnt up in the fire of wisdom, and he attains peace as his mind becomes stabilized in the Self.

4. True renunciation is renunciation of doership

The conventional belief is that renunciation means giving up the world.  The Bhagavad-Gita focuses more upon the attitude of renunciation rather than mere physical act of renunciation. It declares that one should not renounce actions nor one’s duties and obligations. It is not even practicable. True renunciation is the renunciation of the desire for the fruit of one’s actions.

Renunciation of desires and doership are far more important because they are responsible for our sinful karma and our bondage to the mortal world. All actions arise from God in the domain of Nature due to the activity of the gunas. He is the sacrificer, the sacrifice and the object of sacrifice. He is the doer and the deed. The knower of this truth becomes free by that knowledge. While performing his actions, he knows that he is not the doer, and he does nothing at all. He performs them with his mind fixed on God, offering them to him as a sacrifice, without any attachment. Thereby, he remains untouched by sin, just as a lotus-leaf is untouched by the water in which it grows.

A Karma yogi lives and dies for the sake of God. He engages in actions for his inner purification, not to gain worldly things. In performing them, he merely uses his body, mind, senses and intelligence with indifference, giving up all attachment for their outcome and offering the fruit of his actions to God. Mentally renouncing all actions and practising self-control, he happily lives in his body, neither acting nor making others to act. Offering the fruit of his actions to God, he attains peace through Self-realization and becomes one with God.

The scripture declares that a true sanyasi has no attachment to the sense-objects, nor to his actions. He renounces all thoughts about the world and conquers his lower self (mind and body) by (contemplating upon) his higher self. Becoming established in God, he remains the same to the dualities of life such as heat and cold, pleasure and pain, honor and dishonor. For him a clod of earth or a piece of gold is the same. He is equal minded, neutral and the impartial between friends and foes and between saints and sinners alike.

5. Acknowledge the presence of God in you and in everything

The  Bhagavad-Gita refers to both God and Self as the same or as the aspects of the same reality. God is the creator of all. He is hidden in them as their very selves. The imperishable Self resides in the perishable body as the overlord (Adhidaiva) and inner witness (Sakshi). He is the same in all and pervades all. For liberation one should absorb the mind in the contemplation of God or the Self. When the barriers between the two dissolve, one becomes united with God and attains liberation.

What one thinks at the time of death is equally important. At the time of death if a person’s mind is engaged in the contemplation of God, he readily attains liberation. Therefore, one should remember God at all times, with the mind and intellect absorbed in Him so that at the time of death it will be easier for him to remember God. By the constant practice of yoga, a devotee achieves single-minded devotion to God. His mind ceases to think of anything else, as he constantly meditates upon him. By that thought alone he attains supreme peace and liberation.

The scriptures describe God as the ultimate reality. He is the support and source of all, without a second. By becoming established in Prakriti, he manifests the worlds and beings and exists in them as their very essence. The whole universe is permeated and enveloped by him. At the beginning of every cycle of creation, he brings forth the worlds and beings and in the end, withdraws them all. Since he is unattached, indifferent and without desires and attachments, his actions do not bind him, nor produce any karma.

We also learn from the discourse that God is both manifested and unmanifested. Worshipping the latter is difficult because he cannot be known. The manifested God performs many duties for the order and regularity of the worlds. As the lord of creation, he acts as the creator, preserver and protector. If the situation goes out of control, he incarnates upon earth to restore Dharma and destroy evil. When he appears upon earth in physical form, deluded people do not recognize him or acknowledge his greatness, whereas the wise ones who are endowed with discretion, know his true nature and worship him with unwavering devotion.

6. Surrender to God with devotion

The implied message of  the Bhagavad-Gita is that all yogas eventually culminate in devotion to God. Devotion is the highest expression of selfless love, in which devotees seek nothing but the love of God and his constant presence. Although he is impartial and shows no favors, he readily responds to his devotees. They are dearer to him who worship him with single minded devotion, always thinking of him, and forever absorbed in his thoughts. Such people are never lost to him. He takes care of their duties and responsibilities and looks after them.

The scripture gives the subtle hint that one should worship the highest, supreme Brahman rather than the gods and demigods. People may worship God or his numerous form according to their knowledge and wisdom. Those who worship other gods also in a way worship Him only because he is the Lord of all and the final recipient of all offerings. However, those who worship others go to them, but those who worship him attain him only in the end.

God is the epitome of unconditional love. He readily reciprocates the love and devotion of his devotees and accepts whatever offering they make to him with love and devotion. Therefore, the scripture suggests that everything should be offered to God before one enjoys it. In other words, whatever you do, eat, pour into the sacred fire, give as charity or perform as a penance, it should be offered to Him only with pure devotion and without expectations. Lord Krishna states that through pure devotion, by constantly thinking of him and worshipping him, doing actions for his sake, taking refuge in him and renouncing all fruits of actions, controlling the mind and body, with no expectations, steady of mind, a devotee can easily attain God. Such a devotee is very dearer to God, and he takes care of him in every possible way.

7. Know the truth about the three gunas

References to the gunas are found throughout the  Bhagavad-Gita, except in the first chapter. The Gunas are the basic modes or tendencies, which influence the movement, direction and orientation of all animate and inanimate objects in God’s creation. They are universal, permeate all objects and beings and determine their properties and inherent nature. The gunas are different from the tattvas or the finite realities of Nature, but more pervasive. Hence, they influence even the tattvas and their behavior. The gunas also have the tendency to compete with each other and predominate. They have an impact on our thinking and behavior. Since they induce desires, the Bhagavadgita declares that all actions arise from the gunas only.

The gunas are three namely Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. In the primordial Nature, they are in perfect equilibrium but in creation they are present in different permutations and combinations, which is why we have so much diversity in creation. In humans, they are responsible for desires, attachments, desire ridden actions and thereby bondage. By knowing the gunas and their basic propensities, a devotee can overcome their influence and achieve perfection. Through detachment, renunciation, transformative practices, devotion and the grace of God, he can overcome the triple gunas and attain salvation.

The scripture explains the nature of each guna and its influence. Sattva is pure and luminous. It binds the soul to the world through the desire for happiness and knowledge. Rajas is born of passion. It binds the soul through the desire for the fruits of actions. Tamas is born of ignorance and indolence. It is responsible for the grossness of the mind and body. It binds the soul through the desire for rest, inertia, slothfulness and indolence. These three gunas bind the soul to the illusion and chain of births and deaths.

Conclusion

 The Bhagavad-Gita is a practical philosophy. Its teaching can be applied to every aspect of human life. In the teachings of Lord Krishna, you can discern an integrated approach in which you can combine the best of all the yogas to achieve the four aims of human life, namely Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, without risking your liberation or incurring sinful karma. From the scripture, we learn the importance of leading a divine centered life, in which every action becomes an offering and act of worship.

The solution to the problem of suffering is overcoming desires by practising detachment, renunciation, selfless actions, devotional services, equanimity, sameness and discretion. One should not renounce action, nor avoid doing obligatory duties, but dutifully perform them for the sake of God and offer them to him without expectations. By combining the best of the prescribed yogas namely karma yoga, jnana yoga, sanyasa yoga, atma samyama yoga and bhakti yoga, casting away egoism and demonic qualities, overcoming the impurities, and cultivating pure devotion, one can escape from the cycle of births and deaths. Actions performed in this manner do not bind people. Always engaged in some action, taking shelter in him, by his grace, they attain the eternal, imperishable Abode.

The Bhagavadgita is called the secret knowledge. It contains ordinary secrets as well as utmost secrets. In ancient times, it was probably taught to qualified students only. Hence, it is also considered an Upanishad. For this reason, Lord Krishna says that the knowledge of  the Bhagavad-Gita should never be spoken to anyone who is not austere, who is without devotion, who has no desires, who does not listen and who speaks ill of God. However, whoever teaches it to his devotees with supreme adoration to him, he will attain Him without any doubt.

हरिणीं सुवर्णरजतस्रजाम्।

चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं

करैर्वहन्तीं कमलासनस्थाम्।

बालार्क कोटि प्रतिभां त्रिणेत्रां

भजेहमाद्यां जगदीस्वरीं त्वाम्॥३०॥

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये

शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके।

शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके देवि

नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥३१॥

सरसिजनिलये सरोजहस्ते

धवलतरांशुक गन्धमाल्यशोभे।

भगवति हरिवल्लभे मनोज्ञे

त्रिभुवनभूतिकरि प्रसीद मह्यम् ॥३२॥

विष्णुपत्नीं क्षमां देवीं

माधवीं माधवप्रियाम्।

विष्णोः प्रियसखीं देवीं

नमाम्यच्युतवल्लभाम्॥३३॥

महालक्ष्मी च विद्महे

विष्णुपत्नीं च धीमहि।

तन्नो लक्ष्मीः प्रचोदयात्॥३४॥

श्रीवर्चस्यमायुष्यमारोग्यमा

विधात् पवमानं महियते।

धनं धान्यं पशुं बहुपुत्रलाभं

शतसंवत्सरं दीर्घमायुः॥३५॥

ऋणरोगादिदारिद्र्यपाप

क्षुदपमृत्यवः।

भयशोकमनस्तापा

नश्यन्तु मम सर्वदा॥३६॥

य एवं वेद ॐ महादेव्यै च

विष्णुपत्नीं च धीमहि।

तन्नो लक्ष्मीः प्रचोदयात्

ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥३७॥

सत्यं बृहदृतमुग्रं दीक्षा तपो ब्रह्म यज्ञः पृथिवीं धारयन्ति ।

सा नो भूतस्य भव्यस्य पत्न्युरुं लोकं पृथिवी नः कृणोतु ॥१॥

Salutations to mother earth! the truth (satyam), the cosmic divine law (ritam), the spiritual passion manifested in mighty initiations, penances and self dedications to the search of brahman (by the sages); these have sustained the mother earth for ages (who in turn have supported these in her bosom), she, who is to us the consort of the past and the future (being its witness), may she expand our inner life in this world towards the cosmic life (through her purity and vastness).

असंबाधं बध्यतो मानवानां यस्या उद्वतः प्रवतः समं बहु ।

नानावीर्या ओषधीर्या बिभर्ति पृथिवी नः प्रथतां राध्यतां नः ॥२॥

Salutations to mother earth! who extends unimpeded freedom (both outer and inner) to human beings through her mountains, slopes and plains, she bears many plants and medicinal herbs of various potencies; may she extend her riches to us (and make us healthy).

यस्यां समुद्र उत सिन्धुरापो यस्यामन्नं कृष्टयः संबभूवुः ।

यस्यामिदं जिन्वति प्राणदेजत्सा नो भूमिः पूर्वपेये दधातु ॥३॥

Salutations to mother earth! in her is woven together ocean and river waters; in her is contained food which she manifests when ploughed, in her indeed is alive all lives; may she bestow us with that life.

यस्याश्चतस्रः प्रदिशः पृथिव्या यस्यामन्नं कृष्टयः संबभूवुः ।

या बिभर्ति बहुधा प्राणदेजत्सा नो भूमिर्गोष्वप्यन्ने दधातु ॥४॥

Salutations to mother earth! in her resides the four directions of the world; in her is contained food which she manifests when ploughed, she sustains the various lives living in her; may she, the mother earth, bestow on us the ray of life present even in food.

यस्यां पूर्वे पूर्वजना विचक्रिरे यस्यां देवा असुरानभ्यवर्तयन् ।

गवामश्वानां वयसश्च विष्ठा भगं वर्चः पृथिवी नो दधातु ॥५॥

Salutations to mother earth! in her our forefathers lived and performed (their activities) in earlier times; in her the devas (the good forces) overturned the asuras (the evil forces) (since earlier times), in her lived the cows, horses, birds (and other animals in earlier times); may she, the mother earth, bestow on us prosperity and splendour.

विश्वंभरा वसुधानी प्रतिष्ठा हिरण्यवक्षा जगतो निवेशनी ।

वैश्वानरं बिभ्रती भूमिरग्निमिन्द्रऋषभा द्रविणे नो दधातु ॥६॥

Salutations to mother earth! she is Vishwambhara (all-bearing), she is Vasudhaa (producer of all wealth), she is Pratishtha (foundation on which we live), she is Hiranyavaksha (of golden bosom) and the dwelling place of the world,

she holds the Vaishvanara (the universal fire) within her, the fire which empowers Indra and Rishabha; may the mother earth bestow on us (the splendour of that fire and make us strong).

यां रक्षन्त्यस्वप्ना विश्वदानीं देवा भूमिं पृथिवीमप्रमादम् ।

सा नो मधु प्रियं दुहामथो उक्षतु वर्चसा ॥७॥

Salutations to mother earth! her, the devas protect sleeplessly with vigilence, she who is the all-giving mother earth, may she milk for us that delightful honey which gives the great splendour (of divinity).

यार्णवेऽधि सलिलमग्न आसीद्यां मायाभिरन्वचरन्मनीषिणः ।

यस्या हृदयं परमे व्योमन्त्सत्येनावृतममृतं पृथिव्याः ।

सा नो भूमिस्त्विषिं बलं राष्ट्रे दधातूत्तमे ॥८॥

Salutations to mother earth! sitting above sea as well as lying immersed in its waters (in meditation), the sages pursued her by supernatural powers (i.e. tried to understand her real nature by yogic powers), (they found that) the heart of mother earth lies in the highest vyoman (spiritual sky) enveloped by truth and immortality, may she, the mother earth, bestow her splendorous vigour on us and our great kingdom.

यस्यामापः परिचराः समानीरहोरात्रे अप्रमादं क्षरन्ति ।

सा नो भूमिर्भूरिधारा पयो दुहामथो उक्षतु वर्चसा ॥९॥

Salutations to mother earth! in her the waters flow on all sides day and night with vigilence (i.e. unceasingly), may she, the mother earth give us the milk of her abundant streams, and moisten us with its splendour (present in water).

यामश्विनावमिमातां विष्णुर्यस्यां विचक्रमे ।

इन्द्रो यां चक्र आत्मनेऽनमित्रां शचीपतिः ।

सा नो भूमिर्वि सृजतां माता पुत्राय मे पयः ॥१०॥

Salutations to mother earth! her, the aswins (divine physicians) have measured out (i.e. filled her with herbs and healing qualities), in her Vishnu strode (imparting her with divine qualities), Indra, the husband of Shachi, made her soul free from enemies (i.e. made her soul the friend of all like a mother to a son), may she pour forth her milk (with kindness) as a mother does to her son.

गिरयस्ते पर्वता हिमवन्तोऽरण्यं ते पृथिवि स्योनमस्तु ।

बभ्रुं कृष्णां रोहिणीं विश्वरूपां ध्रुवां भूमिं पृथिवीमिन्द्रगुप्ताम् ।

अजीतेऽहतो अक्षतोऽध्यष्ठां पृथिवीमहम् ॥११॥

Salutations to mother earth! O mother earth, may your hills and snow-clad mountains (spread its coolness within us); may your forests spread its delight within us, you present a vishwarupa with your many colours – Babhru (brown) (of mountains), Krishna (blue) (of rivers), Rohini (red) (of flowers); (but behind all these enchanting appearances) O mother earth, you are like Dhruva – firm and immovable; and you are protected by Indra, (on your firm foundation) which is unconquered, unslayed and unbroken whole, I stand firm (and whole, O mother).

यत्ते मध्यं पृथिवि यच्च नभ्यं यास्त ऊर्जस्तन्वः संबभूवुः ।

तासु नो धेह्यभि नः पवस्व माता भूमिः पुत्रो अहं पृथिव्याः ।

पर्जन्यः पिता स उ नः पिपर्तु ॥१२॥

Salutations to mother earth! in your center, O mother earth, is your navel from which the vital power emanates and spreads out, absorb us in that power and purify us, O bhoomi mata, i am the son of mother earth, parjanya (rain god) is my father, may he fill us (with the vital power in water).

यस्यां वेदिं परिगृह्णन्ति भूम्यां यस्यां यज्ञं तन्वते विश्वकर्माणः ।

यस्यां मीयन्ते स्वरवः पृथिव्यामूर्ध्वाः शुक्रा आहुत्याः पुरस्तात् ।

सा नो भूमिर्वर्धयद्वर्धमाना ॥१३॥

Salutations to mother earth! in her, bhoomi (ground) has spread herself as the sacrificial altar; in her, all the activities of the world has spread themselves as yagya, in her, from the beginning, the sounds (of activities) of the world (resembling the chants of yagya) during oblations rises up and disappears in the purifying upper layers (symbolically purifying the workers), may the expansion (expanding space) provided by the earth, expand (our inner selves also).

यो नो द्वेषत्पृथिवी यः पृतन्याद्योऽभिदासान्मनसा यो वधेन ।

तं नो भूमे रन्धय पूर्वकृत्वरि ॥१४॥

Salutations to mother earth! he who hates us, O earth, he who attacks us or mentally considers us as enemies, or he who strikes us, him, O mother earth, subdue, as you have done since earliest times.

त्वज्जातास्त्वयि चरन्ति मर्त्यास्त्वं बिभर्षि द्विपदस्त्वं चतुष्पदः ।

तवेमे पृथिवि पञ्च मानवा येभ्यो ज्योतिरमृतं मर्त्येभ्य उद्यन्त्सूर्यो रश्मिभिरातनोति ॥१५॥

Salutations to mother earth! (first those) produced by you, (second) those moving about in you, (third) those two-footed and (fourth) those four-footed ones; (all of) whom you bear in the land of mortality, fifth is the manava, from whom the light of immortality emanates (even) from the land of mortality, which O mother earth, you diffuse with the rays of the rising sun (i.e. the essence of immortality pervades in you).

ता नः प्रजाः सं दुह्रतां समग्रा वाचो मधु पृथिवी धेहि मह्यम् ॥१६॥

Salutations to mother earth! (the essence of immortality pervades in you) may we, your children (be able to) together milk the ritam (divine order) present everywhere in you, O mother earth, by absorbing (i.e. understanding) the great honeyed speech (vedic mantras).

विश्वस्वं मातरमोषधीनां ध्रुवां भूमिं पृथिवीं धर्मणा धृताम् ।

शिवां स्योनामनु चरेम विश्वहा ॥१७॥

Salutations to mother earth! the herbs (plants) which are like mothers of the world (who sustains us) grows on the immovable earth (bhoomi); the earth which is held by dharma, and in which auspiciousness gently pervades throughout the world.

महत्सधस्थं महती बभूविथ महान्वेग एजथुर्वेपथुष्टे ।

महांस्त्वेन्द्रो रक्षत्यप्रमादम् ।

सा नो भूमे प्र रोचय हिरण्यस्येव संदृशि मा नो द्विक्षत कश्चन ॥१८॥

Salutations to mother earth! great is this place where we stand together (i.e. live together); mighty is the force present in it, which controls its great speed of movement and shaking, great is the god indra who protects her with vigilence (day and night), (in this great meeting place enveloped by divine powers) may she the bhoomi (earth), make us lustrous like gold so that we do not see anyone with the attitude of hatred.

अङ्गं हरेः पुलकभूषणमाश्रयन्ती

भृङ्गाङ्गनेव मुकुलाभरणं तमालम् ।

अङ्गीकृताखिलविभूतिरपाङ्गलीला

माङ्गल्यदास्तु मम मङ्गळदेवतायाः ॥ १॥

To the Hari who wears supreme happiness as ornament,the goddess Lakshmi is attracted like the black bees getting attracted to the unopened buds of black Tamala tree, let her who is the goddess of all good things, grant me a glance that will bring prosperity.

मुग्धा मुहुर्विदधती वदने मुरारेः

प्रेमत्रपाप्रणिहितानि गतागतानि ।

माला दृशोर्मधुकरीव महोत्पले या

सा मे श्रियं दिशतु सागरसम्भवायाः ॥ २॥

The shy glances filled with hesitation and love of her who is born to the ocean of milk, again and again return to the face of Murari, like the honey bees return to the pretty blue lotus. Let those glances shower me with wealth.

आमीलिताक्षमधिगम्य मुदा मुकुन्दं

आनन्दकन्दमनिमेषमनङ्गतन्त्रम् ।

आकेकरस्थितकनीनिकपक्ष्मनेत्रं

भूत्यै भवेन्मम भुजङ्गशयाङ्गनायाः ॥ ३॥

Goddess Lakshmi with happiness, shyness, love has her gaze fixed on her lord who has his eyes closed in ecstasy. Let her, who is the wife of Him who sleeps on the snake, shower me with wealth.

बाह्वन्तरे मधुजितः श्रितकौस्तुभे या

हारावलीव हरिनीलमयी विभाति ।

कामप्रदा भगवतोऽपि कटाक्षमाला

कल्याणमावहतु मे कमलालयायाः ॥ ४॥

He who has won over Madhu (Lord Vishnu), wears the Kousthuba as ornament. He also wears the garland of goddess Lakshmi’s glances which are like the blue Indraneela, filled with love to protect and are capable of fulfilling all the wishes

of the lord himself. May these also fall on me and grant me all that is good.

कालाम्बुदाळिललितोरसि कैटभारेः

धाराधरे स्फुरति या तडिदङ्गनेव ।

मातुस्समस्तजगतां महनीयमूर्तिः

भद्राणि मे दिशतु भार्गवनन्दनायाः ॥ ५॥

Like the streak of lightning illuminating the dark black clouds, Mahalakshmi is shining on the dark , broad chest of Vishnu – the one who killed Kaidaba. Let the eyes of this great mother of the entire universe, the daughter of Sage Bharghava, fall on me and bring me prosperity.

प्राप्तं पदं प्रथमतः खलु यत्प्रभावान्-

माङ्गल्यभाजि मधुमाथिनि मन्मथेन ।

मय्यापतेत्तदिह मन्थरमीक्षणार्धं

मन्दालसं च मकरालयकन्यकायाः ॥ ६॥

The god of love Manmatha could reach Madhusudana the killer of demon Madhu only because of Her kind glances loaded with love and blessing. Let that auspicious and indolent side glance fall on me.

विश्वामरेन्द्रपदविभ्रमदानदक्षं

आनन्दहेतुरधिकं मुरविद्विषोऽपि ।

ईषन्निषीदतु मयि क्षणमीक्षणार्ध-

मिन्दीवरोदरसहोदरमिन्दिरायाः ॥ ७॥

A momentary glance from the goddess is enough to make one as king of Devas in this world. It made Indra regain his kingdom. It has made Madhusudana supremely happy. May her blue lotus eyes glance at me for a moment.

इष्टा विशिष्टमतयोऽपि यया दयार्द्र

दृष्ट्या त्रिविष्टपपदं सुलभं लभन्ते ।

दृष्टिः प्रहृष्टकमलोदरदीप्तिरिष्टां

पुष्टिं कृषीष्ट मम पुष्करविष्टरायाः ॥ ८॥

To her devotees and those who are great, grants she a place in heaven which is difficult to attain, just by a compassion filled look. Let her sparkling eyes which are like the fully opened lotus fall on me and grant me all my desires.

दद्याद्दयानुपवनो द्रविणाम्बुधारां

अस्मिन्नकिञ्चनविहङ्गशिशौ विषण्णे ।

दुष्कर्मघर्ममपनीय चिराय दूरं

नारायणप्रणयिनीनयनाम्बुवाहः ॥ ९॥

Like how the wind helps release the rain on the parched land and quench thirst of the Chataka bird, like that drive away my load of sins Oh, darling of Narayana by the glance from your cloud like dark eyes.

धीर्देवतेति गरुडध्वजसुन्दरीति

शाकम्भरीति शशिशेखरवल्लभेति ।

सृष्टिस्थितिप्रलयकेलिषु संस्थितायै

तस्यै नमस्त्रिभुवनैकगुरोस्तरुण्यै ॥ १०॥

She is the preceptor of all three worlds. She is variously known the goddess of Knowledge, the consort of Vishnu who has Garuda as flag, the power that causes death at time of deluge and she is the wife of Him who has the crescent. She does the creation, upkeep and destruction. My salutations to her.

श्रुत्यै नमोऽस्तु शुभकर्मफलप्रसूत्यै

रत्यै नमोऽस्तु रमणीयगुणार्णवायै ।

शक्त्यै नमोऽस्तु शतपत्रनिकेतनायै

पुष्ट्यै नमोऽस्तु पुरुषोत्तमवल्लभायै ॥ ११॥

Salutations to you, the very manifestation of the Vedas which gives rise to good actions. Beautiful like Rathi you are the ocean of the most beautiful qualities. Salutation to you as Shakthi ,who lives in the hundred petalled lotus. Salutations to you who is goddess of plenty and is the consort of Purushottama.

नमोऽस्तु नालीकनिभाननायै

नमोऽस्तु दुग्धोदधिजन्मभूम्यै ।

नमोऽस्तु सोमामृतसोदरायै

नमोऽस्तु नारायणवल्लभायै ॥ १२॥

Salutations to her who is as pretty as the lotus in full bloom. Salutations to her who is born from ocean of milk. Salutations to the sister of nectar and the moon. Salutations to the consort of Narayana.

नमोऽस्तु हेमाम्बुजपीठिकायै

नमोऽस्तु भूमण्डलनायिकायै ।

नमोऽस्तु देवादिदयापरायै

नमोऽस्तु शार्ङ्गायुधवल्लभायै ॥ १३॥

Salutations to her who has the golden lotus as seat. Salutations to her who is the leader of the universe. Salutations to her who showers mercy on devas. And salutations to the consort of Him who has the bow called Saranga.

नमोऽस्तु देव्यै भृगुनन्दनायै

नमोऽस्तु विष्णोरुरसि स्थितायै ।

नमोऽस्तु लक्ष्म्यै कमलालयायै

नमोऽस्तु दामोदरवल्लभायै ॥ १४॥

Salutations to her who is daughter of Bhrigu, who adorns the broad chest of Vishnu. Salutations to Goddess Lakshmi who lives in a lotus and saluations to her who is the consort of Damodhara.

नमोऽस्तु कान्त्यै कमलेक्षणायै

नमोऽस्तु भूत्यै भुवनप्रसूत्यै ।

नमोऽस्तु देवादिभिरर्चितायै

नमोऽस्तु नन्दात्मजवल्लभायै ॥ १५॥

Salutations to her who is light living in lotus flower. Salutations to her who is the earth and also mother of earth. Salutations to her who is worshipped by devas. And salutations to her who is the consort of the son of Nanda.

सम्पत्कराणि सकलेन्द्रियनन्दनानि

साम्राज्यदानविभवानि सरोरुहाक्षि ।

त्वद्वन्दनानि दुरिताहरणोद्यतानि

मामेव मातरनिशं कलयन्तु मान्ये ॥ १६॥

Giver of wealth, giver of pleasures to all senses, giver of the right to rule kingdoms. Worshipping you lotus eyed goddess who removes all miseries My salutations to you mother.

यत्कटाक्षसमुपासनाविधिः

सेवकस्य सकलार्थसम्पदः ।

सन्तनोति वचनाङ्गमानसैः

त्वां मुरारिहृदयेश्वरीं भजे ॥ १७॥

He who worships your sidelong glances is blessed with wealth and prosperity. My salutations through word, thought and deed to the queen of the heart of my Lord Murari.

सरसिजनिलये सरोजहस्ते

धवळतमांशुकगन्धमाल्यशोभे ।

भगवति हरिवल्लभे मनोज्ञे

त्रिभुवनभूतिकरि प्रसीद मह्यम् ॥ १८॥

She who sits on the lotus with a lotus in her hands, dressed in dazzling white, adorned with garlands and sandal paste, the goddess who is the consort of Hari, gladdens our mind. She who confers prosperity on the three worlds, please show compassion towards me.

दिग्घस्तिभिः कनककुम्भमुखावसृष्ट

स्वर्वाहिनी विमलचारुजलप्लुताङ्गीम् ।

प्रातर्नमामि जगतां जननीमशेष

लोकाधिनाथगृहिणीममृताब्धिपुत्रीम् ॥ १९॥

The eight celestial elephants guarding various directions bathe you everyday with waters of the holy Ganga poured out from golden vessels.

My salutations to you, the mother of all worlds, consort of the lord of worlds and daughter of the ocean which gave nectar.

कमले कमलाक्षवल्लभे त्वं

करुणापूरतरङ्गितैरपाङ्गैः ।

अवलोकय मामकिञ्चनानां

प्रथमं पात्रमकृत्रिमं दयायाः ॥ २०॥

She who is the lotus and is the consort of the lord with lotus like eyes, direct your gaze filled with mercy at me who is the poorest of the poor. First make me the vessel to receive your pity and compassion.

देवि प्रसीद जगदीश्वरि लोकमातः

कल्यानगात्रि कमलेक्षणजीवनाथे ।

दारिद्र्यभीतिहृदयं शरणागतं मां

आलोकय प्रतिदिनं सदयैरपाङ्गैः ॥ २१॥

She who is the controller of the universe and protector of people, bless me with your lotus eyed gazes and your limbs. My heart is filled with fear of poverty. O compassionate one, forgive me and watch over me everyday.

स्तुवन्ति ये स्तुतिभिरमूभिरन्वहं

त्रयीमयीं त्रिभुवनमातरं रमाम् ।

गुणाधिका गुरुतरभाग्यभागिनो

भवन्ति ते भुवि बुधभाविताशयाः ॥ २२॥

The one who offers these prayers daily to her who is the personification of the Vedas, who is the mother of all the three worlds, who is goddess Rema (Lakshmi), will undoubtedly be blessed with good qualities, with great fortunes and he would live in this world with great recognition even from the wise.

॥ इति श्रीमद् शङ्कराचार्यकृत

श्री कनकधारास्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Kanakadhara Stotram is a hymn (Stotra) composed in Sanskrit by Sri Adi Sankaracharya. Kanakadhārā means “stream” (dhārā) of “gold” (kanaka), and the hymn is called by this name since legend has it that when Adi Sankara recited it, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in front of him and unleashed a stream of gold. The hymn contains a description of the beauty, personality, power and graciousness of Goddess Lakshmi.

कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मिः करमध्ये सरस्वति ।

करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम् ॥

समुद्रवसने देवि पर्वतस्तनमण्डले ।

विष्णुपत्नि नमस्तुभ्यं पादस्पर्शं क्षमस्वमे ॥

नमस्तेऽस्तु महामाये श्रीपीठे सुरपूजिते ।

शङ्खचक्रगदाहस्ते महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥१॥

Salutations to you O great maya, one who resides in Sri Chakra and is adored by the gods, one who holds the conch-shell, the discus and the mace, I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

नमस्ते गरुडारूढे कोलासुरभयंकरि ।

सर्वपापहरे देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥२॥

Salutations to the one who is riding the eagle Garuda (Lord Vishnu’s vehicle). To the one, who destroyed the demon Kola asura. To the one, who can destroy all sins caused by the mind, body and the soul. I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

सर्वज्ञे सर्ववरदे सर्वदुष्टभयंकरि ।

सर्वदुःखहरे देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥३॥

To the one, who is aware of everything in the creation, one who can fulfill all desires, one who is the destroyer of all evils, one who removes all miseries. I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

सिद्धिबुद्धिप्रदे देवि भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायिनि ।

मन्त्रमूर्ते सदा देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥४॥

To the one who bestows success and intelligence. To the one who gives liberation or moksha (salvation). To the one who is an embodiment of all mantras, I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

आद्यन्तरहिते देवि आद्यशक्तिमहेश्वरि ।

योगजे योगसम्भूते महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥५॥

To the one who has no beginning or end, to one who the primordial energy of this cosmic creation. To one who is the divine fire born of all yoga, to the one who is in the minds of the all yogis, I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

स्थूलसूक्ष्ममहारौद्रे महाशक्तिमहोदरे ।

महापापहरे देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥६॥

To the one who is the gross and subtle manifestation of Lord Rudra, to that ultimate strength who holds the entire creation within you, to the one who is the greatest energy of the cosmos and to the one who can eliminate all the hurdles of the progress. I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

पद्मासनस्थिते देवि परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणि ।

परमेशि जगन्मातर्महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥७॥

To the one who is seated in the yogic lotus posture, to the one can assume the form of supreme brahman, to the one who is the supreme and universal mother of the entire creation, I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

श्वेताम्बरधरे देवि नानालङ्कारभूषिते ।

जगत्स्थिते जगन्मातर्महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥८॥

One who is clad in pure White clothes (symbolic of purity, sanctity and truth), one who is adorned with many ornaments, one who is the universal divine mother of the entire cosmic genesis of all time and space, and the mother of all creation, I worship to thee, Sri Maha Lakshmi.

महालक्ष्म्यष्टकं स्तोत्रं यः पठेद्भक्तिमान्नरः ।

सर्वसिद्धिमवाप्नोति राज्यं प्राप्नोति सर्वदा ॥९॥

The devotee who chants this verse of eight stanzas to goddess Lakshmi gains all success and gains sovereignty at all times.

एककाले पठेन्नित्यं महापापविनाशनम् ।

द्विकालं यः पठेन्नित्यं धनधान्यसमन्वितः ॥१०॥

He who always recites once daily, gains destruction of great sin; he who recites twice daily, always is endowed with wealth and food.

त्रिकालं यः पठेन्नित्यं महाशत्रुविनाशनम् ।

महालक्ष्मिर्भवेन्नित्यं प्रसन्ना वरदा शुभा ॥११॥

He who recites it three times daily always gains destruction of great enemies, and (goddess Lakshmi) the pure giver of boons, would be always pleased (with the person).

Oh Devi, I am telling you the armor which gets you everything,

Reading or making others read, men get rid of all their sorrows.

If he who does not know learns this Kavacham,

Along with the Durga Mantram,

He would add to himself the strength,

Of the five serpents again.

Let Uma Devi protect my head,

Let my forehead be protected by her who carries the soola,

Let the lion protect my eyes,

And let her who lives near the gate protect my ears.

Let she who is like incense protect my nose,

Let she who carries everything protect my face,

Let Chandika Devi protect my tongue,

Let Soupathrika protect my neck.

Let Asoka Vasini protect my consciousness

Let Vajra Dharini protect my two arms,

Let Lalitha Devi protect my heart,

Let my belly be protected by She who rides on a lion.

Let Bhagwathi Devi protect my hips,

Let She who lives on Vindhya protect my two thighs,

Let the very strong one protect my calf,

And let she who lives on all beings protect my two feet.

Thus stands the Devi who protects the three worlds,

Please protect all my body parts,

My salutations to Goddess Durga.

प्रथम नाम शैलपुत्री(1) है। (1. गिरिराज हिमालय की पुत्री पार्वती देवी’। यद्यपि ये सबकी अधीश्वरी हैं, तथापि हिमालय की तपस्या और प्रार्थना से प्रसन्न हो कृपा-पूर्वक उनकी पुत्री के रूप में प्रकट हुई। यह बात पुराणों में प्रसिद्ध है)

दूसरी मूर्ति का नाम ब्रह्मचारिणी(2) है। (2. ब्रह्म चारयितुं शीलं यस्याः सा ब्रह्मचारिणी – सच्चिदानन्दमय ब्रह्मस्वरूप की प्राप्ति कराना जिनका स्वभाव हो, वे ‘ब्रह्मचारिणी’ हैं)

तीसरा स्वरूप चन्द्रघण्टा(3) के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। (3. चन्द्रः घण्टायां यस्याः सा – आह्लादकारी चन्द्रमा जिनकी घण्टा में स्थित हों, उन देवी का नाम ‘चन्द्रघण्टा’ है)

चौथी मूर्ति को कूष्माण्डा(4) कहते हैं। (4. कुत्सितः ऊष्मा कूष्मा – त्रिविधतापयुतः संसारः, स अण्डे मांसपेश्यामुदररूपायां यस्याः सा कूष्माण्डा। – अर्थात् त्रिविध तापयुक्त संसार जिनके उदर में स्थित है, वे भगवती ‘कूष्माण्डा’ कहलाती हैं)

पाँचवीं दुर्गा का नाम स्कन्दमाता(5) है। (5. छान्दोग्यश्रुति के अनुसार भगवती की शक्ति से उत्पन्न हुए सनत्कुमार का नाम स्कन्द है। उनकी माता होनेसे वे ‘स्कन्दमाता’ कहलाती हैं)

देवी के छठे रूप को कात्यायनी(6) कहते हैं। (6. देवताओं का कार्य सिद्ध करने के लिये देवी महर्षि कात्यायन के आश्रम पर प्रकट हुईं और महर्षि ने उन्हें अपनी कन्या माना; इसलिये ‘कात्यायनी’ नाम से उनकी प्रसिद्धि हुई)

सातवाँ कालरात्रि(7) और (7. सबको मारने वाले काल की भी रात्रि (विनाशिका) होने से उनका नाम ‘कालरात्रि’ है)

आठवाँ स्वरूप महागौरी(8) के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। (8. इन्होंने तपस्याद्वारा महान् गौरवर्ण प्राप्तः किया था, अतः ये महागौरी कहलायीं)

नवीं दुर्गा का नाम सिद्धिदात्री(9) है। (9. सिद्धि अर्थात् मोक्ष को देने वाली होने से उनका नाम ‘सिद्धिदात्री’ है)

ये सब नाम सर्वज्ञ महात्मा वेदभगवान्‌ के द्वारा ही प्रतिपादित हुए हैं ॥३–५॥

जो मनुष्य अग्नि में जल रहा हो, रणभूमि में शत्रुओं से घिर गया हो, विषम संकट में फँस गया हो तथा इस प्रकार भय से आतुर होकर जो भगवती दुर्गा की शरण में प्राप्त हुए हों, उनका कभी कोई अमंगल नहीं होता। युद्ध के समय संकट में पड़ने पर भी उनके ऊपर कोई विपत्ति नहीं दिखायी देती। उन्हें शोक, दुःख और भय की प्राप्ति नहीं होती ॥६–७॥

जिन्होंने भक्तिपूर्वक देवी का स्मरण किया है, उनका निश्चय ही अभ्युदय होता है। देवेश्वरि ! जो तुम्हारा चिन्तन करते हैं, उनकी तुम निःसन्देह रक्षा करती हो ॥८॥

चामुण्डा देवी प्रेतपर आरूढ़ होती हैं। वाराही भैंसे पर सवारी करती हैं। ऐन्द्री का वाहन ऐरावत हाथी है। वैष्णवी देवी गरुड पर ही आसन जमाती हैं ॥९॥

माहेश्वरी वृषभ पर आरूढ़ होती हैं। कौमारी का वाहन मयूर है। भगवान् विष्णु की प्रियतमा लक्ष्मी देवी कमल के आसन पर विराजमान हैं और हाथों में कमल धारण किये हुए हैं ॥१०॥

वृषभ पर आरूढ़ ईश्वरी देवी ने श्वेत रूप धारण कर रखा है। ब्राह्मी देवी हंस पर बैठी हुई हैं और सब प्रकार के आभूषणों से विभूषित हैं ॥११॥

इस प्रकार ये सभी माताएँ सब प्रकार की योग-शक्तियों से सम्पन्न हैं। इनके सिवा और भी बहुत सी देवियाँ हैं, जो अनेक प्रकार के आभूषणों की शोभा से युक्त तथा नाना प्रकार के रत्नों से सुशोभित हैं ॥१२॥

ये सम्पूर्ण देवियाँ क्रोध में भरी हुई हैं और भक्तों की रक्षा के लिये रथपर बैठी दिखायी देती हैं। ये शंख, चक्र, गदा, शक्ति, हल और मुसल, खेटक और तोमर, परशु तथा पाश, कुन्त और त्रिशूल एवं उत्तम शार्ङ्गधनुष आदि अस्त्र-शस्त्र अपने हाथों में धारण करती हैं। दैत्यों के शरीर का नाश करना, भक्तों को अभयदान देना और देवताओं का कल्याण करना यही उनके शस्त्र धारण का उद्देश्य है ॥१३–१५॥

कवच आरम्भ करने के पहले इस प्रकार प्रार्थना करनी चाहिये –] महान् रौद्ररूप, अत्यन्त घोर पराक्रम, महान् बल और महान् उत्साहवाली देवि! तुम महान् भय का नाश करने वाली हो, तुम्हें नमस्कार है ॥१६॥

तुम्हारी ओर देखना भी कठिन है। शत्रुओं का भय बढ़ाने वाली जगदम्बिके! मेरी रक्षा करो। पूर्व दिशा में ऐन्द्री (इन्द्र-शक्ति) मेरी रक्षा करे। अग्निकोण में अग्नि-शक्ति, दक्षिण दिशा में वाराही तथा नैर्ऋत्यकोण में खड्गधारिणी मेरी रक्षा करे। पश्चिम दिशा में वारुणी और वायव्यकोण में मृगपर सवारी करने वाली देवी मेरो रक्षा करे ॥१७–१८॥

उत्तर दिशा में कौमारी और ईशान कोण में शूलधारिणी देवी रक्षा करे। ब्रह्माणि! तुम ऊपर की ओर से मेरी रक्षा करो और वैष्णवी देवी नीचे की ओरसे मेरी रक्षा करे ॥१९॥

इसी प्रकार शव को अपना वाहन बनाने वाली चामुण्डा देवी दसों दिशाओं में मेरी रक्षा करे। जया आगे से और विजया पीछे की ओरसे मेरी रक्षा करे ॥२०॥

वामभाग में अजिता और दक्षिणभाग में अपराजिता रक्षा करे। उद्योतिनी शिखा की रक्षा करे। उमा मेरे मस्तक पर विराजमान होकर रक्षा करे ॥२१॥

ललाट में मालाधरी रक्षा करे और यशस्विनी-देवी मेरी भौंहों का संरक्षण करे। भौंहों के मध्यभाग में त्रिनेत्रा और नथुनों की यमघण्टा-देवी रक्षा करे ॥२२॥

दोनों नेत्रों के मध्यभाग में शंखिनी और कानों में द्वारवासिनी रक्षा करे। कालिका-देवी कपोलों की तथा भगवती शांकरी कानों के मूलभाग की रक्षा करे ॥२३॥

नासिका में सुगन्धा और ऊपर के ओठ में चर्चिका-देवी रक्षा करे। नीचे के ओठ में अमृतकला तथा जिह्वा में सरस्वती देवी रक्षा करे ॥२४॥

कौमारी दाँतों की और चण्डि का कण्ठप्रदेश की रक्षा करे। चित्रघण्टा गलेकी घाँटी की और महामाया तालु में रहकर रक्षा करे ॥२५॥

कामाक्षी ठोढ़ी की और सर्वमंगला मेरी वाणी की रक्षा करे। भद्रकाली ग्रीवा में और धनुर्धरी पृष्ठवंश (मेरुदण्ड)-में रहकर रक्षा करे ॥२६॥

कण्ठ के बाहरी भाग में नीलग्रीवा और कण्ठ की नली में नलकूबरी रक्षा करे। दोनों कंधों में खड्गिनी और मेरी दोनों भुजाओं की वज्रधारिणी रक्षा करे ॥२७॥

दोनों हाथों में दण्डिनी और अंगुलियों में अम्बिका रक्षा करे। शूलेश्वरी नखों की रक्षा करे। कुलेश्वरी कुक्षि (पेट) में रहकर रक्षा करे ॥२८॥

महादेवी दोनों स्तनोंकी और शोकविनाशिनी-देवी मन की रक्षा करे। ललिता-देवी हृदय में और शूलधारिणी उदर में रहकर रक्षा करे ॥२९॥

नाभि में कामिनी और गुह्यभाग की गुह्येश्वरी रक्षा करे। पूतना और कामि का लिंग की और महिषवाहिनी गुदा की रक्षा करे ॥३०॥

भगवती कटिभाग में और विन्ध्यवासिनी घुटनों की रक्षा करे। सम्पूर्ण कामनाओं को देनेवाली महाबला-देवी दोनों पिण्डलियों की रक्षा करे ॥३१॥

नारसिंही दोनों घुट्ठियों की और तैजसी-देवी दोनों चरणों के पृष्ठभाग की रक्षा करे। श्रीदेवी पैरों की अंगुलियों में और तलवासिनी पैरों के तलुओं में रहकर रक्षा करे ॥३२॥

अपनी दाढ़ों के कारण भयंकर दिखायी देने वाली दंष्ट्राकराली-देवी नखों की और ऊर्ध्वकेशिनी-देवी केशों की रक्षा करे। रोमावलियों के छिद्रों में कौबेरी और त्वचा की वागीश्वरी-देवी रक्षा करे ॥३३॥

पार्वती-देवी रक्त, मज्जा, वसा, मांस, हड्डी और मेद की रक्षा करे। आँतों की कालरात्रि और पित्त की मुकुटेश्वरी रक्षा करे ॥३४॥

मूलाधार आदि कमल-कोशों में पद्मावती-देवी और कफ में चूडामणि-देवी स्थित होकर रक्षा करे। नख के तेज की ज्वालामुखी रक्षा करे। जिसका किसी भी अस्त्र से भेदन नहीं हो सकता, वह अभेद्या-देवी शरीर की समस्त संधियों में रहकर रक्षा करे ॥३५॥

ब्रह्माणि ! आप मेरे वीर्य की रक्षा करें। छत्रेश्वरी छाया की तथा धर्मधारिणी-देवी मेरे अहंकार, मन और बुद्धि की रक्षा करे ॥३६॥

हाथ में वज्र धारण करने वाली वज्रहस्तादेवी मेरे प्राण, अपान, व्यान, उदान और समान वायु की रक्षा करे। कल्याण से शोभित होने वाली भगवती कल्याणशोभना मेरे प्राण की रक्षा करे ॥३७॥

रस, रूप, गन्ध, शब्द और स्पर्श-इन विषयों का अनुभव करते समय योगिनी-देवी रक्षा करे तथा सत्त्वगुण, रजोगुण और तमोगुण की रक्षा सदा नारायणी-देवी करे ॥३८॥

वाराही आयु की रक्षा करे। वैष्णवी धर्म की रक्षा करे तथा चक्रिणी (चक्र धारण करने वाली) देवी यश, कीर्ति, लक्ष्मी, धन तथा विद्या की रक्षा करे ॥३९॥

इन्द्राणि ! आप मेरे गोत्र की रक्षा करें। चण्डिके! तुम मेरे पशुओं की रक्षा करो। महालक्ष्मी पुत्रों की रक्षा करे और भैरवी पत्नी की रक्षा करे ॥४०॥

मेरे पथ की सुपथा तथा मार्ग की क्षेमकरी रक्षा करे। राजा के दरबार में महालक्ष्मी रक्षा करे तथा सब ओर व्याप्त रहने वाली विजया-देवी सम्पूर्ण भयों से मेरी रक्षा करे ॥४१॥

देवि! जो स्थान कवच में नहीं कहा गया है, अतएव रक्षा से रहित है, वह सब तुम्हारे द्वारा सुरक्षित हो; क्योंकि तुम विजय-शालिनी और पाप-नाशिनी हो ॥४२॥

यदि अपने शरीर का भला चाहे तो मनुष्य बिना कवच के कहीं एक पग भी न जाय – कवच का पाठ करके ही यात्रा करे। कवच के द्वारा सब ओर से सुरक्षित मनुष्य जहाँ-जहाँ भी जाता है, वहाँ-वहाँ उसे धन-लाभ होता है तथा सम्पूर्ण कामनाओं की सिद्धि करने वाली विजय की प्राप्ति होती है। वह जिस-जिस अभीष्ट वस्तु का चिन्तन करता है, उस उसको निश्चय ही प्राप्त कर लेता है। वह पुरुष इस पृथ्वी पर तुलना रहित महान् ऐश्वर्य का भागी होता है ॥४३–४४॥

कवच से सुरक्षित मनुष्य निर्भय हो जाता है। युद्ध में उसकी पराजय नहीं होती तथा वह तीनों लोकों में पूजनीय होता है ॥४५॥

देवी का यह कवच देवताओं के लिये भी दुर्लभ है। जो प्रतिदिन नियम पूर्वक तीनों संध्याओं के समय श्रद्धा के साथ इसका पाठ करता है, उसे दैवी कला प्राप्त होती है तथा वह तीनों लोकों में कहीं भी पराजित नहीं होता। इतना ही नहीं, वह अपमृत्यु से (अकाल मृत्यु अथवा अग्नि, जल, बिजली एवं सर्प आदि से होने वाली मृत्यु को ‘अपमृत्यु’ कहते हैं) रहित हो सौसे भी अधिक वर्षों तक जीवित रहता है ॥४६–४७॥

मकरी, चेचक और कोढ़ आदि उसकी सम्पूर्ण व्याधियाँ नष्ट हो जाती हैं। कनेर, भाँग, अफीम, धतूरे आदि का स्थावर विष, साँप और बिच्छू आदि के काटने से चढ़ा हुआ जंगम विष तथा अहिफेन और तेल के संयोग आदि से बनने वाला कृत्रिम विष—ये सभी प्रकार के विष दूर हो जाते हैं, उनका कोई असर नहीं होता ॥४८॥

इस पृथ्वी पर मारण- मोहन आदि जितने आभिचारिक प्रयोग होते हैं तथा इस प्रकार के जितने मन्त्र-यन्त्र होते हैं, वे सब इस कवच को हृदय में धारण कर लेने पर उस मनुष्य को देखते ही नष्ट हो जाते हैं। ये ही नहीं, पृथ्वी पर विचरने वाले ग्राम-देवता, आकाशचारी देव-विशेष, जल के सम्बन्ध से प्रकट होने वाले गण, उपदेशमात्र से सिद्ध होने वाले निम्न-कोटि के देवता, अपने जन्म के साथ प्रकट होने वाले देवता, कुल-देवता, माला (कण्ठ माला आदि), डाकिनी, शाकिनी, अन्तरिक्ष में विचरने वाली अत्यन्त बलवती भयानक डाकिनियाँ, ग्रह, भूत, पिशाच, यक्ष, गन्धर्व, राक्षस, ब्रह्मराक्षस, बेताल, कूष्माण्ड और भैरव आदि अनिष्ट कारक देवता भी हृदय में कवच धारण किये रहने पर उस मनुष्य को देखते ही भाग जाते हैं। कवचधारी पुरुष को राजा से सम्मान-वृद्धि प्राप्त होती है। यह कवच मनुष्य के तेज की वृद्धि करने वाला और उत्तम है ॥४९–५२॥

कवच का पाठ करने वाला पुरुष अपनी कीर्ति से विभूषित भूतल पर अपने सुयश के साथ-साथ वृद्धि को प्राप्त होता है। जो पहले कवच का पाठ करके उसके बाद सप्तशती चण्डी का पाठ करता है, उसकी जब तक वन, पर्वत और काननों सहित यह पृथ्वी टिकी रहती है, तब तक यहाँ पुत्र-पौत्र आदि संतान परम्परा बनी रहती है ॥५३–५४॥

फिर देह का अन्त होने पर वह पुरुष भगवती महामाया के प्रसाद से उस नित्य परमपद को प्राप्त होता है, जो देवताओं के लिये भी दुर्लभ है ॥५५॥

वह सुन्दर दिव्य रूप धारण करता और कल्याणमय है शिव के साथ आनन्द का भागी होता है ॥५६॥

ॐ यद्गुह्यं परमं लोके सर्वरक्षाकरं नृणाम्‌।

यन्न कस्यचिदाख्यातं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह।।1।।

मार्कण्डेय जी ने कहा – पितामह! कोई ऐसा साधन बताइये जो इस संसार में अत्यंत गुप्त हो और जो मनुष्यों की हर तरह से रक्षा करता हो और जिसे आपने अब तक किसी और पर प्रकट न किया हो।

।।ब्रह्मोवाच।।

अस्ति गुह्यतमं विप्र सर्वभूतोपकारकम्‌।

देव्यास्तु कवचं पुण्यं तच्छृणुष्व महामुने।।2।।

ब्राह्मण – ऐसा साधन तो देवी का कवच मात्र है, जो अत्यंत गोपनीय, पवित्र और समस्त प्राणियों के लिए कल्याणकारी भी है। हे महामुनि! आप उसे श्रवण करें।

प्रथमं शैलपुत्री च द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी।

तृतीयं चन्द्रघण्टेति कूष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम्‌।।3।।

भगवती का पहला नाम “शैलपुत्री”, दूसरे रूप का नाम “ब्रह्मचारिणी” है। तीसरे स्वरूप को “चंद्रघंटा” के नाम से जाना जाता है। चौथा रूप “कुष्मांडा” के नाम से जाना जाता है।

पंचमं स्कन्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च।

सप्तमं कालरात्रीति महागौरीति चाष्टमम्‌।।4।।

दुर्गा के पांचवें स्वरूप का नाम”स्कंदमाता” है। देवी के छठे रूप को “कात्यायनी” कहा जाता है। सातवें स्वरूप को “कालरात्रि” और आठवें स्वरूप को “महागौरी” के नाम से जाना जाता है।

नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः।

उक्तान्येतानि नामानि ब्रह्मणैव महात्मना।।5।।

देवी दुर्गा के नौवें रूप का नाम “सिद्धिदात्री” है। ये सभी नाम सर्वज्ञ महात्मा वेदभगवान् द्वारा ही प्रतिपादित किये गये हैं।

अग्निता दह्यमानस्तु शत्रुमध्ये गतो रणे।

विषमे दुर्गमे चैव भयार्ताः शरणं गताः।।6।।

जो व्यक्ति अग्नि में जल रहा हो, युद्धभूमि में शत्रुओं से घिरा हो, कठिन परिस्थिति में फंस गया हो और भय से उबरकर देवी दुर्गा की शरण लेता हो, उसे कभी दुर्भाग्य का सामना नहीं करना पड़ता।

न तेषा जायते किंचिदशुभं रणसंकटे।

नापदं तस्य पश्यामि शोकदुःखभयं न हि।।7।।

युद्ध के समय संकट में पड़ने पर भी उन्हें कोई विपत्ति नहीं दिखती, दु:ख, शोक और भय का अनुभव नहीं होता।

यैस्तु भक्त्या स्मृता नूनं तेषां वृद्धि प्रजायते।

ये त्वां स्मरन्ति देवेशि रक्षसे तान्न संशयः।।8।।

जो लोग भक्तिपूर्वक देवी का स्मरण करते हैं उनका उत्थान अवश्य होता है। देवेश्वरी! आप निस्संदेह उन लोगों की रक्षा करते हैं जो आपके बारे में सोचते हैं।

प्रेतसंस्था तु चामुण्डा वाराही महिषासना।

ऐन्द्री गजसमानरूढा वैष्णवी गरुडासना।।9।।

चामुंडा देवी प्रेत पर आरूढ़ होती हैं। वाराही भैंसे की सवारी करती है। ऐन्द्री का वाहन ऐरावत हाथी है। वैष्णवी देवी गरुड़ को अपना आसन बनाती हैं।

माहेश्वरी वृषारूढा कौमारी शिखिवाहना।

लक्ष्मीः पद्मासना देवी पद्महस्ता हरिप्रिया।।10।।

माहेश्वरी बैल पर आरूढ़ होती हैं। कौमारी का वाहन मोर है। भगवान विष्णु (हरि) की प्रिय लक्ष्मीदेवी, कमल के आसन पर बैठी हैं और अपने हाथों में कमल धारण किये हुए हैं।

श्वेतरूपधरा देवी ईश्वरी वृषवाहना।

ब्राह्मी हंससमारूढा सर्वाभरणभूषिता।।11।।

बैल पर सवार ईश्वरी देवी ने श्वेत रूप धारण किया हुआ है। ब्राह्मी देवी हंस पर विराजमान हैं और सभी प्रकार के आभूषणों से सुसज्जित हैं।

इत्येता मातरः सर्वाः सर्वयोगसमन्विताः।

नानाभरणशोभाढ्या नानारत्नोपशोभिताः।।12।।

इस प्रकार ये सभी माताएँ सभी प्रकार की यौगिक शक्तियों से सम्पन्न हैं। इनके अतिरिक्त और भी अनेक देवियाँ हैं, जो नाना प्रकार के आभूषणों से विभूषित तथा नाना प्रकार के रत्नों से सुसज्जित हैं।

दृश्यन्ते रथमारूढा देव्यः क्रोधसमाकुलाः।

शंख चक्रं गदां शक्तिं हलं च मुसलायुधम्।।13।।

खेटकं तोमरं चैव परशुं पाशमेव च।

कुन्तायुधं त्रिशूलं च शांर्गमायुधमुत्तमम्‌।।14।।

दैत्यानां देहनाशाय भक्तानामभयाय च।

धारयन्त्यायुधानीत्थं देवानां च हिताय वस।।15।।

ये सभी देवियां क्रोध से भरी हुई हैं और भक्तों की रक्षा के लिए रथ पर बैठी नजर आती हैं। वह अपने हाथों में शंख, चक्र, गदा, शक्ति, हल और मूसल, खेटक और तोमर, परशु और पाश, कुन्त और त्रिशूल तथा उत्तम धनुष आदि अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण किये हुए हैं। उनके अस्त्र-शस्त्र का उद्देश्य राक्षसों को नष्ट करना, भक्तों को सुरक्षा प्रदान करना और देवताओं का कल्याण करना है।

नमस्तेऽस्तु महारौद्रे महाघोरपराक्रमे।

महावले महोत्साहे महाभयविनाशिनि।।16।।

हे महान उग्रता, अत्यंत वीरता, महान शक्ति और महान उत्साह की देवी, आप असामान्य भय का नाश करने वाली हैं, आपको नमस्कार है।

त्राहि मां देवि दुष्प्रेक्ष्ये शत्रूणां भयवर्धिन।

प्राच्यां रक्षतु मामैन्द्री आग्नेय्यामग्निदेवता।।17।।

दक्षिणेऽवतु वाराहीनैर्ऋत्यां खड्गधारिणी।

प्रतीच्यां वारुणी रक्षेद् वायव्यां मृगवाहिनी।।18।।

आपकी तरफ देखना भी मुश्किल है। शत्रुओं का भय बढ़ाने वाली जगदम्बे मेरी रक्षा करो। पूर्व दिशा में ऐन्द्री (इंद्रशक्ति) मेरी रक्षा करें। अग्निकोण में अग्निशक्ति, दक्षिण में वाराही तथा दक्षिण-पश्चिम में खड्गधारिणी मेरी रक्षा करें। पश्चिम में वारुणी और उत्तर में हिरण की सवारी करने वाली देवी मेरी रक्षा करें।

उदीच्यां पातु कौमारी ऐशान्यां शूलधारिणी।

ऊर्ध्वं ब्रह्माणि मे रक्षेद्धस्ताद् वैष्णवी तथा।।19।।

उत्तर दिशा में कौमारी और ईशान कोण में देवी शूलधारिणी मेरी रक्षा करें। ब्राह्मणी! आप ऊपर (आसमान) से मेरी रक्षा करो और वैष्णवी देवी नीचे (जमीन) से मेरी रक्षा करें।

एवं दश दिशो रक्षेच्चामुण्डा शववाहना।

जया में चाग्रतः पातु विजया पातु पृष्ठतः।।20।।

अजिता वामपार्श्वे तु दक्षिणे चापराजिता।

शिखामुद्योतिनी रक्षेदुमा मूर्ध्नि व्यवस्थिता।।21।।

शव को अपना वाहन बनाने वाली चामुण्डा देवी दसों दिशाओं में मेरी रक्षा करें। जया आगे से और विजया पीछे से मेरी रक्षा करें।

बाईं ओर अजिता और दाईं ओर अपराजिता मेरी रक्षा करें। उद्योतिनी शिखा की रक्षा करे। उमा मेरे सिर पर विराजमान होकर मेरी रक्षा करें।

मालाधारी ललाटे च भ्रुवौ रक्षेद् यशस्विनी।

त्रिनेत्रा च भ्रुवोर्मध्ये यमघण्टा च नासिके।।22।।

शंखिनी चक्षुषोर्मध्ये श्रोत्रयोर्द्वारवासिनी।

कपोलौ कालिका रक्षेत्कर्णमूले च शांकरी।।23।।

मालाधारी मेरे माथे की रक्षा करें और यशस्विनी देवी मेरी भौंहों की रक्षा करें। देवी यमघंटा भौंहों के मध्य भाग और नासिका छिद्र में स्थित त्रिनेत्र की रक्षा करें।

शंखिनी दोनों आँखों के मध्य भाग की और द्वारवासिनी को कानों की रक्षा करें। कालिका देवी गालों की रक्षा करें और भगवती शंकरी कानों के मूल भाग की रक्षा करें।

नासिकायां सुगन्दा च उत्तरोष्ठे च चर्चिका।

अधरे चामृतकला जिह्वायां च सरस्वती।।24।।

दन्तान्‌ रक्षतु कौमारी कण्ठदेशे तु चण्डिका।

घण्टिकां चित्रघण्टा च महामाया च तालुके।।25।।

कामाक्षी चिबुकं रक्षेद् वाचं मे सर्वमंगला।

ग्रीवायां भद्रकाली च पृष्ठवंशे धनुर्धरी।।26।।

नीलग्रीवा बहिःकण्ठे नलिकां नलकूबरी।

स्कन्धयोः खड्गिनी रक्षेद् बाहू में व्रजधारिणी।।27।।

देवी सुगंधा नाक की रक्षा करें और देवी चर्चिका ऊपरी होंठ की रक्षा करें। देवी अमृतकला निचले होंठ की रक्षा करें और सरस्वती जीभ की रक्षा करें।

कुमारी देवी मेरे दांतों की रक्षा करें और चंडिका देवी मेरे गले की रक्षा करें। देवी चित्रघंटा गले में और देवी महामाया तालु में रहकर मेरी रक्षा करें।

देवी कामाक्षी मेरी ठुड्डी की रक्षा करें और सभी सर्वमङ्गला मेरी वाणी की रक्षा करें। भद्रकाली गर्दन की रक्षा करें और धनुर्धरी रीढ़ की हड्डी की रक्षा करें।

नलकूबरी गले और स्वरयंत्र के बाहरी हिस्से की रक्षा करें। खड्गिनी मेरे दोनों कंधों की रक्षा करें और वज्रधारिणी मेरी दोनों भुजाओं की रक्षा करें।

हस्तयोर्दण्डिनी रक्षेदम्बिका चांगुलीषु च।

नखांछूलेश्वरी रक्षेत्कुक्षौ रक्षेत्कुलेश्वरी।।28।।

स्तनौ रक्षेन्महादेवी मनः शोकविनाशिनी।

हृदये ललिता देवी उदरे शूलधारिणी।।29।।

नाभौ च कामिनी रक्षेद् गुह्यं गुह्येश्वरी तथा।

पूतना कामिका मेढ्रं गुदे महिषवाहिनी।।30।।

कट्यां भगवती रक्षेज्जानुनी विन्ध्यवासिनी।

जंघे महाबला रक्षेत्सर्वकामप्रदायिनी।।31।।

अंबिका दोनों हाथों की कलाइयों और उंगलियों की रक्षा करें। शूलेश्वरी नखों की रक्षा करें। कुलेश्वरी कुक्षी (पेट) में रहकर रक्षा करें।

महादेवी दोनों स्तनों की रक्षा करें और दुःखों का नाश करने वाली महादेवी मन की रक्षा करें। ललिता देवी हृदय की और शूलधारिणी पेट की रक्षा करें।

देवी कामिनी नाभि की तथा गुह्येश्वरी गुप्तांग की रक्षा करें। पूतना और कामिका लिंग की और महिषावाहिनी गुदा की रक्षा करें। भगवती कमर की रक्षा करें और विंध्यवासिनी घुटनों की रक्षा करें। सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण करने वाली देवी महाबाला दोनों पिण्डलियों की रक्षा करें।

गुल्फयोर्नारसिंही च पादपृष्ठे तु तैजसी।

पादांगुलीषु श्री रक्षेत्पादाधस्तलवासिनी।।32।।

नारसिंही दोनों घुटनों की रक्षा करें और तैजसी देवी दोनों पैरों के पिछले हिस्से की रक्षा करें। श्री देवी पैरों की उंगलियों में और तलवासिनी पैरों के तलवों में रहकर उनकी रक्षा करें।

नखान्‌ दंष्ट्राकराली च केशांश्चैवोर्ध्वकेशिनी।

रोमकूपेषु कौबेरी त्वचं वागीश्वरी तथा।।33।।

देवी दंष्ट्रकराली, जो अपनी दाढों के कारण भयंकर दिखती हैं, नाखूनों की रक्षा करें और देवी उर्ध्वकेशिनी बालों की रक्षा करें। देवी कौबेरी रोमावलियों के छिद्रों की रक्षा करें और देवी वागीश्वरी त्वचा की रक्षा करें।

रक्तमज्जावसामांसान्यस्थिमेदांसि पार्वती।

अन्त्राणि कालरात्रिश्च पित्तं च मुकुटेश्वरी।।34।।

पद्मावती पद्मकोशे कफे चूडामणिस्तथा।

ज्वालामुखी नखज्वालामभेद्या सर्वसंधिषु।।35।।

माता पार्वती रक्त, मज्जा, मेद, मांस, अस्थि और मेद की रक्षा करें। कालरात्रि आंतों की और मुकुटेश्वरी पित्त की रक्षा करें। पद्मावती देवी मूलाधार आदि कमल कोषों में स्थित रहें और चूड़ामणि देवी उनकी रक्षा के लिए कफों में विद्यमान रहें। देवी ज्वालामुखी नाखूनों के तेज की रक्षा करें। जिसका भेदन किसी भी शस्त्र से नहीं किया जा सकता, वह अभेद्य देवी शरीर के समस्त जोड़ों में रहकर रक्षा करें।

शुक्रं ब्रह्माणि मे रक्षेच्छायां छत्रेश्वरी तथा।

अहंकारं मनो बुद्धिं रक्षेन्मे धर्मधारिणी।।36।।

हे ब्राह्मणी! आप कृपया मेरे वीर्य की रक्षा करें। छत्रेश्वरी देवी छाया की रक्षा करें और धर्मधारिणी देवी मेरे अहंकार, मन और बुद्धि की रक्षा करें।

प्राणापानौ तथा व्यानमुदानं च समानकम्‌।

वज्रहस्ता च मे रक्षेत्प्राणं कल्याणशोभना।।37।।

हाथ में वज्र धारण करने वाली वज्रहस्ता देवी मेरे प्राण, अपान, व्यान, उदान और समान वायु की रक्षा करें। कल्याण से सुशोभित देवी कल्याण शोभना मेरे जीवन की रक्षा करें।

रसे रूपे च गन्धे च शब्दे स्पर्शे च योगिनी।

सत्त्वं रजस्तमश्चैव रक्षेन्नारायणी सदा।।38।।

स्वाद, रूप, गंध, शब्द और स्पर्श का अनुभव करते समय माँ योगिनी देवी मेरी रक्षा करें और देवी नारायणी सदैव सत्वगुण, रजोगुण और तमोगुण की रक्षा करें।

आयू रक्षतु वाराही धर्मं रक्षतु वैष्णवी।

यशः कीर्तिं च लक्ष्मीं च धनं विद्यां च चक्रिणी।।39।।

वाराही युग की रक्षा करें। वैष्णवी धर्म की रक्षा करें और देवी चक्राणी मेरे यश, कीर्ति, लक्ष्मी, धन और ज्ञान की रक्षा करें।

गोत्रमिन्द्राणि मे रक्षेत्पशून्मे रक्ष चण्डिके।

पुत्रान्‌ रक्षेन्महालक्ष्मीर्भार्यां रक्षतु भैरवी।।40।।

इन्द्राणी! आप मेरे कुल की रक्षा करें। चंडिके! आप मेरे जानवरों की रक्षा करें। महालक्ष्मी मेरे पुत्रों की रक्षा करें और भैरवी मेरी पत्नी की रक्षा करें।

पन्थानं सुपथा रक्षेन्मार्गं क्षेमकरी तथा।

राजद्वारे महालक्ष्मीर्विजया सर्वतः स्थिता।।41।।

मेरा पथ सुगम और मेरा पथ सुरक्षित रहे। राजा के दरबार में महालक्ष्मी मेरी रक्षा करें और देवी विजया, जो हर जगह मौजूद हैं, सभी भय से मेरी रक्षा करें।

रक्षाहीनं तु यत्स्थानं वर्जितं कवचेन तु।

तत्सर्वं रक्ष मे देवि जयन्ती पापनाशिनी।।42।।

हे देवी! जो स्थान कवच से ढका हुआ नहीं है, जो सुरक्षा से रहित है, वह सब आपके द्वारा सुरक्षित हो। क्योंकि आप विजयी और पापों का नाश करने वाले हैं।

पदमेकं न गच्छेतु यदीच्छेच्छुभमात्मनः।

कवचेनावृतो नित्यं यत्र यत्रैव गच्छति।।43।।

तत्र तत्रार्थलाभश्च विजयः सार्वकामिकः।

यं यं चिन्तयते कामं तं तं प्राप्नोति निश्चितम्‌।

परमैश्वर्यमतुलं प्राप्स्यते भूतले पुमान्‌।।44।।

निर्भयो जायते मर्त्यः संग्रामेष्वपराजितः।

त्रैलोक्ये तु भवेत्पूज्यः कवचेनावृतः पुमान्‌।।45।।

यदि मनुष्य अपने शरीर का कल्याण चाहता है तो उसे बिना कवच के कहीं भी एक कदम भी नहीं रखना चाहिए। कवच का पाठ करके ही यात्रा करें। कवच से सब ओर से सुरक्षित हुआ मनुष्य जहां भी जाता है, उसे धन और विजय की प्राप्ति होती है तथा उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण करने वाली विजय प्राप्त होती है। वह जिस भी इच्छित वस्तु के बारे में सोचता है, उसे वह अवश्य प्राप्त होती है। वह मनुष्य इस पृथ्वी पर अतुलनीय महान ऐश्वर्य का उपभोग करता है।

इदं तु देव्याः कवचं देवानामपि दुर्लभम्‌।

यः पठेत्प्रयतो नित्यं त्रिसन्ध्यं श्रद्धयान्वितः।।46।।

दैवी कला भवेत्तस्य त्रैलोक्येष्वपराजितः।

जीवेद् वर्षशतं साग्रमपमृत्युविवर्जितः।।47।।

नश्यन्ति व्याधयः सर्वे लूताविस्फोटकादयः।

स्थावरं जंगमं चैव कृत्रिमं चापि यद्विषम्‌।।48।।

कवच से सुरक्षित मनुष्य निर्भय हो जाता है। वह युद्ध में कभी पराजित नहीं होते और तीनों लोकों में पूजे जाते हैं।

देवी का यह कवच देवताओं के लिए भी दुर्लभ है। जो व्यक्ति इसका नियमित रूप से प्रतिदिन तीनों संध्याओं में भक्तिपूर्वक पाठ करता है, उसे दिव्य कला की प्राप्ति होती है। और वह तीनों लोकों में कहीं भी पराजित नहीं होता। इतना ही नहीं, वह अमर हैं और सौ वर्षों से भी अधिक समय तक जीवित रहते हैं।

अभिचाराणि सर्वाणि मन्त्रयन्त्राणि भूतले।

भूचराः खेचराश्चैव जलजाश्चोपदेशिकाः।।49।।

सहजा कुलजा माला डाकिनी शाकिनी तथा।

अन्तरिक्षचरा घोरा डाकिन्यश्च महाबलाः।।50।।

ग्रहभूतपिशाचाश्च यक्षगन्धर्वराक्षसाः।

ब्रह्मराक्षसवेतालाः कूष्माण्डा भैरवादयः।।51।।

नश्यन्ति दर्शनात्तस्य कवचे हृदि संस्थिते।

मानोन्नतिर्भवेद् राज्ञस्तेजोवृद्धिकरं परम्‌।।52।।

यशसा वर्धते सोऽपि कीर्तिमण्डितभूतले।

जपेत्सप्तशतीं चण्डीं कृत्वा तु कवचं पुरा।।53।।

उसके सूखा रोग, चेचक और कुष्ठ आदि सभी रोग नष्ट हो जाते हैं। कनेर, भांग, अफ़ीम, धतूरा आदि का स्थावर विष, साँप और बिच्छू आदि के काटने से उत्पन्न होने वाला स्थावर विष तथा अहिफेन और तेल आदि के संयोग से बना हुआ कृत्रिम विष – ये सभी प्रकार के विष दूर हो जाते हैं, उनका कोई असर नहीं होता।

इस पृथ्वी पर मारण-मोहन आदि जितने भी अनुष्ठानिक प्रयोग तथा मन्त्र-यन्त्र किये जाते हैं, वे सब इस कवच को हृदय में धारण करते ही नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

इतना ही नहीं, पृथ्वी पर विचरण करने वाले ग्राम देवता, विशेष दिव्य देवता, जल के संबंध में प्रकट होने वाले गण, केवल उपदेश से सिद्ध होने वाले निम्न स्तर के देवता, जन्म के साथ प्रकट होने वाले देवता, कुल देवता, माला, डाकिनी, शाकिनी, अंतरिक्ष में विचरण करने वाली अत्यंत शक्तिशाली एवं खतरनाक डाकिनियाँ, ग्रह, भूत, पिशाच, यक्ष, गंधर्व, राक्षस, ब्रह्मराक्षस, बेताल, कूष्माण्ड तथा भैरव आदि दुष्ट देवता भी उस पुरुष को देखकर भाग जाते हैं, जो इस कवच को हृदय में धारण करता है।

कवच धारण करने वाला व्यक्ति राजा की ओर से सम्मान बढ़ाता है। यह कवच व्यक्ति के बल को बढ़ाता है और उत्तम होता है।

यावद्भूमण्डलं धत्ते सशैलवनकाननम्‌।

तावत्तिष्ठति मेदिन्यां संततिः पुत्रपौत्रिकी।।54।।

देहान्ते परमं स्थानं यत्सुरैरपि दुर्लभम्‌।

प्राप्नोति पुरुषो नित्यं महामायाप्रसादतः।।55।।

लभते परमं रूपं शिवेन सह मोदते।।ॐ।।56।।

कवच का पाठ करने वाला मनुष्य यश से सुशोभित पृथ्वी पर सुयश सहित समृद्धि पाता है। जो पहले कवच और फिर सप्तशती चंडी का पाठ करता है, जब तक वन, पर्वत और कर्णसहित यह पृथ्वी जीवित है, तब तक यहां पुत्र, पौत्र आदि संतान उत्पन्न करने की परंपरा चलती रहती है।

शरीर के अंत के बाद वह मनुष्य भगवती महामाया की कृपा से प्रतिदिन परम गति को प्राप्त करता है, जो देवताओं के लिए भी दुर्लभ है। वह एक सुंदर दिव्य रूप धारण करता है और कल्याण शिव के साथ आनंद का आनंद लेता है।

गीता यह भी सिखाती है कि मृत्यु का भय व्यर्थ है क्योंकि मृत्यु हमारे शरीर में विराजमान आत्मा को कभी नहीं मार सकती, मृत्यु केवल मांसपेशियों से बने शरीर का अंत है.

“कर्म” करना सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात है और व्यक्ति को पूरी निष्ठा और विश्वास के साथ कार्य करना चाहिए, जबकि काम करते समय परिणाम का भय और फल की उम्मीद करना बेकार है.

गीता के अनुसार ईश्वर हर क्षण हमारे साथ है और कण-कण में विद्यमान है.

अपने मन में दूसरों के लिए बुरे भाव या बुरे विचार रखना ही हमारे अपने विनाश का कारण है, इसलिए इन बुरे विचारों को अपने मन से दूर रखना चाहिए.

गीता में कहा गया है कि क्रोध से भ्रम पैदा होता है, जो बुद्धि को विचलित करता है. भ्रमित व्यक्ति अपने मार्ग से भटक जाता है. तब सारे तर्क नष्ट हो जाते हैं, जिससे मनुष्य का पतन हो जाता है. इसलिए हमें अपने क्रोध पर नियंत्रण रखना चाहिए.

भगवान श्री कृष्ण कहते हैं कि आत्मनिरीक्षण से स्वयं को जानो क्योंकि जब आप स्वयं को पहचानेंगे तभी आप अपनी क्षमता का आकलन कर पाएंगे. ज्ञानरूपी तलवार से अज्ञान का नाश करना चाहिए. जब कोई व्यक्ति अपनी क्षमता का आकलन करता है, तभी उसका उद्धार हो पाता है.

भगवान श्री कृष्ण कहते हैं कि मृत्यु एक अपरिवर्तनीय सत्य है, लेकिन केवल यह शरीर नश्वर है. आत्मा अजर अमर है, आत्मा को कोई काट नहीं सकता, अग्नि जला नहीं सकती और जल उसे गीला नहीं कर सकता. जिस प्रकार से पुराने वस्त्र बदलकर नए वस्त्र धारण किए जाते हैं उसी प्रकार आत्मा एक शरीर का त्याग करके दूसरे जीव में प्रवेश करती है.

मनुष्य के भीतर सुख और आनंद का वास है. लेकिन मनुष्य उसे स्त्री में, घर में और बाहरी सुखों में ढूंढ रहा है.

मनुष्य इंद्रियों के अधीन है, इसलिए जीवन में विकार और परेशानियां आती हैं.

जुआ, मद्यपान, परस्त्रीगमन (अनैतिक संबंध), हिंसा, असत्य, मद, आसक्ति और निर्दयता इन सब में कलियुग का वास है, इसलिए इसका दूसरा नाम “घोर कलियुग” है.

मनुष्य को हमेशा अपने मन और बुद्धि पर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहिए. क्योंकि वे मनुष्य को बार-बार धोखा देते हैं. स्वयं को निर्दोष मानना बहुत बड़ा पाप सिद्ध होता है.

क्यों व्यर्थ चिंता करते हो? किससे व्यर्थ डरते हो? कौन तुम्हें मार सकता है? आत्मा न पैदा होती है, न मरती है.

जो हुआ, वह अच्छा हुआ, जो हो रहा है, वह अच्छा हो रहा है, जो होगा, वह भी अच्छा ही होगा. तुम भूत का पश्चाताप न करो. भविष्य की चिंता न करो. वर्तमान चल रहा है.

तुम्हारा क्या गया, जो तुम रोते हो? तुम क्या लाए थे, जो तुमने खो दिया? तुमने क्या पैदा किया था, जो नाश हो गया? न तुम कुछ लेकर आए, जो लिया यहीं से लिया. जो दिया, यहीं पर दिया. जो लिया, इसी (भगवान) से लिया. जो दिया, इसी को दिया.

खाली हाथ आए और खाली हाथ चले. जो आज तुम्हारा है, कल और किसी का था, परसों किसी और का होगा. तुम इसे अपना समझकर मग्न हो रहे हो. बस यही प्रसन्नता तुम्हारे दु:खों का कारण है.

परिवर्तन संसार का नियम है. जिसे तुम मृत्यु समझते हो, वही तो जीवन है. एक क्षण में तुम करोड़ों के स्वामी बन जाते हो, दूसरे ही क्षण में तुम दरिद्र हो जाते हो. मेरा-तेरा, छोटा-बड़ा, अपना-पराया, मन से मिटा दो, फिर सब तुम्हारा है, तुम सबके हो.

न यह शरीर तुम्हारा है, न तुम शरीर के हो. यह अग्नि, जल, वायु, पृथ्वी, आकाश से बना है और इसी में मिल जाएगा, परंतु आत्मा स्थिर है- फिर तुम क्या हो?

तुम अपने आपको भगवान को अर्पित करो. यही सबसे उत्तम सहारा है. जो इसके सहारे को जानता है, वह भय, चिंता व शोक से सर्वदा मुक्त है.

जो कुछ भी तू करता है, उसे भगवान को अर्पण करता चल. ऐसा करने से सदा जीवनमुक्त का आनंद अनुभव करेगा.
